Nur Misuari was the leader of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) during its revolt against the Philippines government. He was born 1932 in Jolo, Philippines, to a poor Tausug Fisherman (Bajak Laut). Despite this background, Nur Misuari a good student and it allowed him access to a good eduction. Nur Misuari became a political science professor at the University of the Philippines. In 1972, he formed the Moro (MNLF) to fight for a separate Islamic state in the southern Philippines. After a cease-fire with the Philippines government in 1977, Nur Misuari left the MNLF and moved to the friendly Muslim countries of Saudi Arabia and Libya until 1986. He then returned to the Philippines and resumed control of the MNLF. Over the next decade the MNLF waged a military war against the Philippine government. In 1986, he negotiated a peace agreement and limited Muslim self-rule. However, the peace agreement failed and he went to exile once again.
